Dalby Toastmasters shone at the recent Michael Mellick Speech Contests, held in Toowoomba on 31 May, taking home two of the three trophies up for grabs. The event showcased the power of personal growth through participation in Toastmasters contests, and Dalby’s members certainly rose to the occasion.
Competing against clubs from across Area 29 Dalby club members demonstrated their commitment to growth, fun, and stepping outside their comfort zones.
Georgina Harmer, in her first-ever contest appearance, impressed everyone with a confident and engaging speech that earned her first place in the Novice category. The Novice Contest is designed to encourage new members to dip their toes into competition, and Georgina embraced the opportunity with poise and enthusiasm.
Club President Kait Carroll also wowed the audience, winning the Tall Tales Contest with a hilariously exaggerated yarn inspired by a local Dalby legend.
Reflecting on the contest experience, Kait reminded members that while competitions are a highlight, the true value of Toastmasters lies in the lifelong skills it builds.
“Toastmasters is so much more than speech-making. It’s about learning to communicate clearly and confidently in everyday situations—whether that’s at work, in the community, or around the dinner table,” she said.
“People often come expecting something formal or intimidating, but they leave feeling encouraged, connected, and surprised by how much fun they had. Events like the Michael Mellick Contests prove that when we step up and give it a go, the results can be amazing.”
Dalby Toastmasters meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm at the Myall Youth and Community Network Centre. Members from across the District are always welcome to visit, support, or even help judge and run future contests.
