Be found & be visited: optimise your website and google presence

Our third Club Marketing Edge webinar focused on one of the most practical and high-impact areas of club marketing: your website, your Google Maps listing and your Google Reviews.

For most potential guests, their first interaction with your club happens online. What they see in that first 30 seconds strongly influences whether they click, trust, and ultimately visit. This session was all about making sure that first impression works in your club’s favour.

Your Club Website Is Your Online Front Door

We began by reframing how clubs think about their websites. A club website is not meant to be a content library or education portal. It serves a much simpler purpose: to introduce your club, build confidence, and guide visitors to take the next step.

Key considerations for your club’s website:

  • Your website should act as a welcoming front page to your club.

  • It should be simple, warm, and easy to understand at a glance.

  • It should direct visitors to either attend a meeting or make contact.

Website Must-Haves for Guest Conversion

We reviewed the essential components every effective club website should include:

  • Accurate branding and a professional, uncluttered look.

  • No more than three pages: Home, Directions, Contact.

  • A homepage with less than 500 words and more emphasis on photos than text.

  • A clear and obvious call to action to visit or contact the club.

  • A clean, memorable URL without long numbers.

The emphasis throughout was on clarity, simplicity and ease of use for someone visiting your site for the first time.

Why Google Maps and Google Reviews Matter

One of the key takeaways from the session was that most people do not find your website first. They find your club via Google Maps.

When someone searches “public speaking club near me” or “Toastmasters near me”, Google Maps listings often appear before websites in search results. This makes your Google presence just as important as your website itself.

We also explored how Google Reviews act as a modern form of word-of-mouth:

  • Reviews build instant trust.

  • Even a small number of recent reviews can significantly lift credibility.

  • Positive reviews increase the likelihood of prospective guests clicking through to your website or deciding to attend.

How to Optimise Your Club’s Google Presence

The session walked through the practical steps clubs can take to strengthen their Google visibility:

  • Claiming or verifying your club’s Google Business listing.

  • Ensuring your club name, meeting address, website link, and meeting times are accurate and consistent with your website.

  • Adding real photos from club meetings.

  • Encouraging members and guests to leave honest Google Reviews after positive experiences.

Consistency between your website and your Google listing is a critical trust signal for both search engines and guests.

Quick Wins to Strengthen Your Online Visibility

Several simple actions were recommended that clubs can implement immediately:

  • Replace generic stock images with real photos from your meetings.

  • Embed a Google Map directly onto your Directions page.

  • Regularly verify that contact details are up to date.

  • Link all social platforms back to your club website.

  • Prompt members to leave Google reviews after strong meeting experiences.

These small improvements compound over time and strengthen both visibility and credibility.

Your Next Steps

Next steps to ramp up your online visbility:

  • Review and update your club website.

  • Claim and clean up your Google Maps listing.

  • Start building a base of genuine Google Reviews.

  • Check that all online information is consistent across platforms.
