Ipswich Celebrates 600th Meeting

Ipswich Toastmasters Club proudly celebrates its 600th meeting. The Ipswich Club is the oldest Toastmasters Club in the Ipswich area that now hosts a total of 7 clubs.

The Ipswich Club began way back in 1983 some 27 years ago and over that time countless numbers of people have graduated through the Toastmasters personal development program to go to lead a more rewarding life.

President Keith Cohen said “Toastmasters offers skills in public speaking, communication and leadership but the best reward of all for members is the gain in self confidence. With these skills members go on to achieve more for themselves in all aspects of their lives.” Area Governor John Hutchins presented President Keith Cohen with a special certificate to mark this significant occasion.

The club was very pleased to have Bette Howard, one of the original members of the Ipswich Club and still an active member of Toastmasters with us on the night and Bette shared with Ben McCormick our youngest member the honour of cutting the 600th meeting cake.

Kawana Waters Club has Travelling Gavel

When Coral McVean, our District Governor, talked about the Travelling Gavel I thought it was a good idea.  One always has the best intentions of visiting other clubs and it’s great in theory, but somehow it doesn’t seem to happen often enough.  The Travelling Gavel presented such an opportunity.

I convinced 7 other members of my club, Kawana Waters, plus one ex-member, recently located to Brisbane to head off to Bunya Club (wherever that is?) and capture this Travelling Gavel.  Three of my intrepid bunch volunteered to be placed on their programme, one as an evaluator and two completing manual speeches.  When the agenda was forwarded to me it was discovered that one of my ‘shy’ members was to be evaluated by Mark Hunter, the World Champion of Public Speaking.  Even though we all know that Mark is a mere mortal, that title carries a lot of weight and I was concerned that Vera might change her mind.

Needless to say, Mark Hunter is as good as an evaluator as he is a speaker and all went well.  In fact, the whole experience was thoroughly enjoyable and very rewarding.  We were warmly welcomed by Bunya Club, although we did have to endure a reasonable amount of good natured name calling like ‘pirates from the north, etc) and there were a few occasions when I felt like I might literally have to kidnap the gavel and make a dash for our vehicles all the while imagining Bunya members in hot pursuit of the wooden artefact with wheels.

As the proud possessors of the Travelling Gavel we immediately accepted a challenge from Buderim Club, which was quickly followed by another challenge from Glasshouse Country Club.  It seems like Sunshine Coast Toastmasters know that the rightful place for this Travelling Gavel is indeed the Sunshine Coast.

Metropolitan Toastmasters must be asleep.  They had their chance at Bunya.  I can’t see the Travelling Gavel leaving the Sunshine Coast anytime soon.  Can you?

Members Matter No 12

Members Matter    No  12

Hello fellow members,

As I write my final “Members Matter,” I wish to leave you with 3 thoughts

4 weeks to go for this Toastmaster’s year?

  • Where are you in your personal journey?
  • Are you on track to achieve your goals and your club’s goals?
  • Is it simply 1 speech for your Competent Communicator or Advanced Communicator or 1 project in your Competent Leadership manual that you need?

I encourage each of you to maintain your focus, visualize your result, believe in yourself and you will achieve your goals.

Something that is fantastic about Toastmasters

I asked Past District Governors Di Riddell, Vernon Flood, Barrie Fuller and Colin McFarlane why they are still active members in their clubs 30 + years after joining?

Their comments included:

  • Watching butterflies emerge from their cocoons through the support that our Organisation gives at every level.
  • Seeing Gary our International President interacting with club members.
  • Colin still enjoys giving and evaluating speeches
  • Barrie says that no matter what your day has been like, the club meeting will always lift your spirits and renew your energy.
  • Vernon used to be shy. Toastmasters supported, persevered and gave him confidence.
  • All four are still gaining as they share knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm.
  • Di said that it is often a newer member who gives you a different perspective. Toastmaster skills have given Di a voice to speak with passion, to women in transition, to write, self publish and serve on boards and committees.
  • Barrie is seeking out opportunities for new clubs in the corporate world. What a challenge!!
  • The life skills that Vernon gained allowed him to retire early in life.
  • The thing they love most about our organisation is its equality, (no sirs or professors,) the fun and friendships.

How long have you been a member?

What friendships have you gained?

How excited are you about attending your club meetings?

Inspiration:

  • Many members have inspired, encouraged and supported me. Who are you allowing to encourage and support you?
  • 10 years ago I joined Toastmasters to improve my impromptu speaking skills.   (I said nothing in my 1st Table Topic  ) Through mentoring, encouragement and Toastmasters powercharged programs, each of us can be the person we dream of being.

Who do you want to be?

Challenge yourself and become that person!

Hot off the press!!

Past District Governor Barrie Fuller has been awarded a Presidential Citation.  Congratulations Barrie!! Barrie will receive his award at the International Convention in Palm Desert.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity of being your District Governor and sharing with you through “Members Matter” this year.  It has been a joy beyond measure to serve our District.

Yours in Toastmasters

Salute to the Stars 2010

What is Salute to the Stars?

Each year District 69 recognises our members who have done that little bit extra but have not received any recognition.

This is the Salute to the Stars which is honoured by having their name and details displayed on a rolling presentation at lunch time at District Convention.

The District is a big place, so naturally we need to know who these wonderful people are and why you believe they should be included in the salute.
