How Can Twitter Help Your Club?

Interview with Lisa Lange, President Riverside Toastmasters Club on using Twitter for your club.

Could you please explain for those people who genuinely have no idea about Twitter, how you use it, how set it up and what followers/ following means (ie not stalking!)

Twitter is a communication tool used for quick, to the point messaging.  You have 140 characters in which to get your message across.

To set up Twitter all you need is a valid email address.  Visit www.twitter.com for easy to follow steps in setting up your account.

You don’t need to be at your PC/Laptop to access Twitter (although there are great desktop tools for when you are).  There’s many mobile apps to make ‘Tweeting’ more convenient and these are generally as user friendly as sms.  Once your account is set up you can ‘find people’ to follow and people can ‘follow’ you.  Following is similar to choosing friends on Facebook and once you’re following someone all of their Tweets will appear on your timeline (page), likewise if someone chooses to follow you then you appear on their timeline.

Twitter has some privacy options that can be selected in the setup process and you don’t have to let everyone see what you’re Tweeting about. In fact if you’d like to keep you whole timeline private (just between you and some select followers) then that is possible too.  Just remember that anything you put out there (anywhere on the internet) is there forever.

How has Twitter worked for you as a networking tool?

Twitter has been an easy way to keep in touch with business contacts on a casual basis.  Instead of having to physically go out and have a meeting with people I can maintain contact on a regular basis at a time that suits me.  When working if I come across an interesting article that might be of interest to my Twitter friends I can post it easily and get an instant response.  This will often prompt discussions (more interaction) strengthening those relationships. Although Social Networking can’t ever replace the benefits of building relationships face to face it certainly helps enhance and strengthen those relationships and works well as part of an overall marketing plan.

How have you set it up and used it?

It’s important to remember that nobody is going to want to keep following you if all you are doing is trying to sell them something. You should share some of your personality so people can get to know more about you as a person – with “business” stuff thrown in every so often. Always remember though that what you put out there stays there forever! A friend of mine once told me that she would never put anything on a social networking site that she wouldn’t want her mother to see. Likewise I’m always conscious of personal safety and refrain from using the names of family members or giving out too many details of future plans etc.

How did you manage to tap in to your network and develop strong business leads?

Being genuine and open to helping other people (not just what’s in it for me) has proven to give great results in all types of networking. When completing a job for some Twitter clients or contacts I’ve often received immediate online recommendations that have led to new contacts and more business. Being able to offer my services and spot an opportunity in conversations was invaluable. I’ve recently sold my business and client base but still have many strong contacts through the “Twitterverse” that will be of benefit to me no matter what my future endeavours are.

I’m hoping to replicate the success of using Twitter for business/networking purposes and build similar connections for our Toastmasters Club.  It’s not just about attracting new members it’s building a support network and sharing information with like-minded people.

Any further information?

When I forwarded our new Twitter info to the club I attached this article that answers a lot of Twitter questions for those unfamiliar with it:

Will you keep in touch on progress?

Will definitely let you know how we go and I’d be very interested to hear success stories/tips from other clubs also.  I’ve used Twitter in business and found it to be a fantastic networking tool while managing to get some strong business leads as well.  Hoping this rubs off for our club.

International Convention 1st Timer

As a first-timer to the International Convention, this event opened my eyes even wider to the world of Toastmasters possibilities.

Not only was the location and setting magnificent, so too was the planning and thought that had gone into every aspect of this Convention.

For your leadership trio (Bruce George, John Kay and myself), it was the first time that we received training together with all other Districts in the world – and the mix of cultures, smiles and accents through the common currency of Toastmasters was magical. I truly felt part of a global organisation.

Another of the leadership trio’s tasks was to schedule interviews with all the candidates for Vice President and International Directors. This was a rewarding and challenging task especially where there were such high calibre candidates. However, as we carried the votes of each club in our District, we wanted to make sure we chose the very best person.

Each of the educational sessions offered a choice between communication or leadership focus and were delivered by very competent speakers. As in each of our speeches there were points for improvement which were duly noted online immediately after each session.

Pushpa Vida, winner of the International Speech Contest at District in May stepped onto the world stage and I, like others, felt incredibly proud of her achievements. Even though she didn’t progress beyond the semi-final stage, her success was being there, giving her best and encouraging each of us to step up.

The International Speech Contest Final was exceptional, with a clear winner who delivered a beautifully structured and emotionally charged speech which grabbed everyone in the vast room. And an Australian placed third.

The highlights for me were the tremendous opportunities for learning and growth, the training sessions, the chance to meet fellow Toastmasters from around the world, and of course the fantastic food and top class venue.

I encourage each of you to make it to at least one International Convention! Next year Las Vegas, the following year Orlando, Florida.

Small Milestone for a Big Future

The newly charted K K Kingston Toastmasters Club has just held their 10th meeting. Although this is just a very small milestone in a club’s progress nonetheless the members of the K K Kingston Club are very excited to be up and running with all members being thrilled to be part of the Toastmaster program.

Thus far the meetings have covered a number of Ice-Breaker speeches plus Table Topics, Word of the Day, Joke of the Day, Gruntmaster-Grammarian and Speech Evaluations.

Although most members are new to Toastmasters the enthusiasm amongst the members is contagious and all are keen to progress. Fortunately they meet every Saturday afternoon so each member’s turn for a speech or other role comes around quite quickly.

Other members of the K K Kingston staff have been welcomed as guests and already there has been two new members sign up. Although a brand new club, President Lyn Dunn and VPE Bertha Koteke have set the club’s sights on being a Distinguished Club this year.

The club was pleased to welcome Keith Cohen, Area 11 Governor from Ipswich who was visiting Lae during the week of August 14 to August 21st. Keith said he was very honoured to be part of their 10th meeting and he was happy to be included on the program as their General Evaluator. Keith noted the club’s enthusiasm and he could see great things happening for them as they all progress along the Toastmasters journey.

All members of the K K Kingston Club in Papua New Guinea wish to send their greetings to all the other Toastmaster members in District 69 saying “Mi tok gutdei na hamamas ikam long PNG. Mi thing yupela istap gut na hamamas long dispela dei
Na mi tokaut long gutpela sindaun bilong yupela long yia ikam”

Which translates to

“Greetings from Papua New Guinea
Hoping you are well and happy
Wishing you every success for the future”

Membership Building Contests

Did you realise that the Toastmaster year is already almost 21 days old?

How prepared are we for the exciting year ahead.  To help us set the scene for a successful year each club is asked to participate in the Toastmasters International Membership Building Contests through out the year.

Members are the lifeblood of, and key to, the strength of your club and our organisation.  We build the strength of our clubs by retaining current members and inducting new ones. Although membership building should be an ongoing continual activity, throughout the year, Toastmasters provides additional encouragement and reward for our efforts through special membership building contests.

Club Contests

  1. Smedley Award : 1 August 2010 – 30 September 2010
  2. Talk Up Toastmasters! 1 February 2011 – 31 March 2011
  3. Beat the Clock: 1 May 2011 – 30 June 2011

Individual Member Sponsors

Program Dates:  1 July 2010 – 30 June 2011

Toastmasters International recognises that most members of Toastmasters joined a club because someone invited them to a meeting.  They recognise the importance of our individual members in our membership building efforts and reward members who sponsor 5, 10 or 15 new members during the Toastmasters year.

Visit the TMI website

Find out more about how your club and members can be recognised and rewarded.

Clubs’ progress will be regularly posted on the website.

It is important to remember that year long attention to membership will bring the best results.  Keep the Contest dates in mind and plan ahead for each of them.

CL Task 6 – Organise a club PR campaign

Competent Communicator Helen Redhead organises a promotional stand at Robina Town Centre to promote Robina Sunrise and other Toastmasters clubs in  area 6.

After much negotiating with the Robina Town centre management Helen organised a stand in the busy shopping  centre and using her delegation skills enlisted members of the club to arrange promotional material and a roster of members to attend during the day. The stand was provided at no cost by the shopping centre and impressed centre management such that we have been invited back again later in the year.

Of note were the number of ex non-current Toastmasters who were thinking of returning and a number of parents enquiring about a gavel club for their children based on good feedback from  Elanora’s efforts in the recent past.

Public relations is about getting the word out and with Helen’s enthusiasm and efforts the Toastmaster’s  word has been spread a little further today.   Pictured above are Helen and Brian Lees spreading the word.

Wedding Bell(e)s

Wedding Belles

Talk of the South Mock Wedding

As you can see by the photo, there was a little gender confusion when Talk of the South Club held a ‘mock wedding’ recently!  As well as being great fun, it was an opportunity for members to show creativity and cleverness in their (manual) speech making.

For instance, here is a quote from the “groom’s” speech: “Getting to know you, getting to know all about you; could it be magic?  Shall we dance? You are the Dancing Queen; I could have danced all night.  Tonight, tonight won’t be just any night”.   No, he/she didn’t sing it all, for which we were most grateful…

And from the “celebrant”: “Bronwyn, do you take Danny for all you can get, to live together in the unholy estate of mayhem?  Will you love the horror and be his cherub until they come to take you away?” and “Danny, do you take Bronwyn to be your awful weathered wife, to live together in the state of uncertainty?”

The names of the participants have been disguised to protect the innocent.  However, I am sure you will recognise some of them despite their ‘unusual’ clothing!

Presidents’ Weekend

Presidents from District 69 are are invited to attend the presidents week-end being held at the Gympie Conference Centre on the 24th -25th July 2010.

It will be an interesting and informative weekend with educational and motivational speakers, interspersed with team building exercises. There will be time for networking and questions (with answers).

It is thanks to the generosity of one of our clubs in Central Division, (paying the airfares) to bring our District 69 representative for the “World Public Speaking Contest” Pushpa Vida to be a guest dinner speaker on Saturday night. This will not only allow us to hear a very proficient speaker – but allow her the opportunity of rehearsing her speech and gain some feed back. We thank this club (who wishes to remain ignominious) for their generosity.

The area had plenty to celebrate with achievement if Area President’s Distinguished status, the club (Gold Coast ) with the highest membership in the District, 40+ members and counting, a new club, Oasis on Broadbeach, chartered and each club in the area distinguished or better.

A spit roast dinner, speeches and good fellowship added along with the induction of new club officers and presentation of a Competent Communicator award made the night a highlight of the year.

Pictured from the left are:
