When Coral McVean, our District Governor, talked about the Travelling Gavel I thought it was a good idea. One always has the best intentions of visiting other clubs and it’s great in theory, but somehow it doesn’t seem to happen often enough. The Travelling Gavel presented such an opportunity.
I convinced 7 other members of my club, Kawana Waters, plus one ex-member, recently located to Brisbane to head off to Bunya Club (wherever that is?) and capture this Travelling Gavel. Three of my intrepid bunch volunteered to be placed on their programme, one as an evaluator and two completing manual speeches. When the agenda was forwarded to me it was discovered that one of my ‘shy’ members was to be evaluated by Mark Hunter, the World Champion of Public Speaking. Even though we all know that Mark is a mere mortal, that title carries a lot of weight and I was concerned that Vera might change her mind.
Needless to say, Mark Hunter is as good as an evaluator as he is a speaker and all went well. In fact, the whole experience was thoroughly enjoyable and very rewarding. We were warmly welcomed by Bunya Club, although we did have to endure a reasonable amount of good natured name calling like ‘pirates from the north, etc) and there were a few occasions when I felt like I might literally have to kidnap the gavel and make a dash for our vehicles all the while imagining Bunya members in hot pursuit of the wooden artefact with wheels.
As the proud possessors of the Travelling Gavel we immediately accepted a challenge from Buderim Club, which was quickly followed by another challenge from Glasshouse Country Club. It seems like Sunshine Coast Toastmasters know that the rightful place for this Travelling Gavel is indeed the Sunshine Coast.
Metropolitan Toastmasters must be asleep. They had their chance at Bunya. I can’t see the Travelling Gavel leaving the Sunshine Coast anytime soon. Can you?
