After much negotiating with the Robina Town centre management Helen organised a stand in the busy shopping centre and using her delegation skills enlisted members of the club to arrange promotional material and a roster of members to attend during the day. The stand was provided at no cost by the shopping centre and impressed centre management such that we have been invited back again later in the year.

Of note were the number of ex non-current Toastmasters who were thinking of returning and a number of parents enquiring about a gavel club for their children based on good feedback from Elanora’s efforts in the recent past.

Public relations is about getting the word out and with Helen’s enthusiasm and efforts the Toastmaster’s word has been spread a little further today. Pictured above are Helen and Brian Lees spreading the word.

As you can see by the photo, there was a little gender confusion when Talk of the South Club held a ‘mock wedding’ recently! As well as being great fun, it was an opportunity for members to show creativity and cleverness in their (manual) speech making.

For instance, here is a quote from the “groom’s” speech: “Getting to know you, getting to know all about you; could it be magic? Shall we dance? You are the Dancing Queen; I could have danced all night. Tonight, tonight won’t be just any night”. No, he/she didn’t sing it all, for which we were most grateful…

And from the “celebrant”: “Bronwyn, do you take Danny for all you can get, to live together in the unholy estate of mayhem? Will you love the horror and be his cherub until they come to take you away?” and “Danny, do you take Bronwyn to be your awful weathered wife, to live together in the state of uncertainty?”

The names of the participants have been disguised to protect the innocent. However, I am sure you will recognise some of them despite their ‘unusual’ clothing!

It will be an interesting and informative weekend with educational and motivational speakers, interspersed with team building exercises. There will be time for networking and questions (with answers).

It is thanks to the generosity of one of our clubs in Central Division, (paying the airfares) to bring our District 69 representative for the “World Public Speaking Contest” Pushpa Vida to be a guest dinner speaker on Saturday night. This will not only allow us to hear a very proficient speaker – but allow her the opportunity of rehearsing her speech and gain some feed back. We thank this club (who wishes to remain ignominious) for their generosity.

The Ipswich Club began way back in 1983 some 27 years ago and over that time countless numbers of people have graduated through the Toastmasters personal development program to go to lead a more rewarding life.

President Keith Cohen said “Toastmasters offers skills in public speaking, communication and leadership but the best reward of all for members is the gain in self confidence. With these skills members go on to achieve more for themselves in all aspects of their lives.” Area Governor John Hutchins presented President Keith Cohen with a special certificate to mark this significant occasion.

The club was very pleased to have Bette Howard, one of the original members of the Ipswich Club and still an active member of Toastmasters with us on the night and Bette shared with Ben McCormick our youngest member the honour of cutting the 600th meeting cake.
