They Shall Grow Not Old
Tuesday, April 13th, 2010
Seen here trying his best to be a combination of Fidel Castro and the Absent Minded Professor is Southern Division member Steve Carratt haranguing the audience on the occasion of his 60th Birthday Party held recently at Duranbah.
There was great attendance from Tweed Valley and Talk of the South Toastmasters Clubs as well as friends and relatives from Perth, Bundaberg and all points between. Sydney and Canberra were well represented. The function doubled as a fund raiser for Rotary and over $500 for the “Polio Plus Project” was raised.
We had a presentation by the Bellywhackers Bushband which surely has the only American didgeridoo (or was it an Alpenhorn?) player In Australia. The digital projector was on hand to throw up all manner of piccys of Steve’s doings over 60 years (quite embarrassing). At one point the microphone gave up the ghost –Steve’s quip “We’re Toastmasters here we don’t need microphones” went down well.
There were a few ad hoc speeches including one from Steve’s sister (all the way from Perth) who really emptied the family skeleton cupboard. Steve owes his longevity to his wife Julie (who is also a Toastmaster) and thus gave out invitations to his 80th birthday. Steve’s soapbox finished with extracts from his treasury of homespun philosophy.
- When all other excuses fail use the Streakers defence - “It seemed like a good idea at the time”
- “Non bastardo carborundum” Latin for “Don’t let the bastards wear you down”
Lessons Learnt from Officer Training
Thursday, February 11th, 2010Summary Report on North Southern Division 2nd Round Training
Things I thought worked well
- We had a separate 1 hour for Presidents & VPEs
- A combined session for
- VPM & VPPR
- Sec & treas
- SAA & Meeting roles
- A combined session for
- We had an ‘After Gold’ session. None with ACG came, but this was mainly made up of DTMs. The action that came from that session was a survey that went out to 24 S/D DTMs, asking them what possibilities (16) they might be interested in. We received back 9 positive replies. Regular news letters will now go out to those 9 under the umbrella of “Bridging Gaps Road-Show”
- Each session was introduced by a current Area Gov.
- We felt it was a great idea to give many different people an opportunity of being a trainer, (A few were 1st. Timers) as we believe that this helps add more passionate leaders. Because of this we were able to have more than 4 Toastmasters on standby as trainers. The morning of the training I got a phone call from one trainer who said they could not make it. We had no trouble putting in a replacement with one hours notice.
Improvements
- We made the mistake of having a separate Area Governors session at the same time as 2 other sessions: this was a great mistake as only a very few went to it. An improvement would be to have this as a plenary session, so no one feels ‘targetted’!.
- Our lunch went for one hour: 45 minutes would have been plenty. Also, lunch cost $12 per head – keeping this down to $5 per head would have been better. We had a caterer, and had to give numbers in a few days before hand. I think it would be better to: not have a caterer, and 1 person go shopping an hour before lunch to get some food, 1-3 people prepare the food , and have people make their own sandwich; or have something like a sausage sizzle.
